How much life insurance do you need?

Calculate a target and understand the assumptions behind it: years of income, debt levels, education planning and what you currently have in place.

A common approach is to total your income-dependent obligations and subtract any existing protection. The number does not have to be precise: term insurance is sold in even figures, and the goal is a total that would keep your household on track through the critical period.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Estimate = earnings × years + obligations + schooling − existing coverage, rounded up to the nearest $5,000. It is a guide, not financial advice.

Why those inputs

Duration of income replacement. Between 10 and 20 years is typical; your specific number depends on how long your dependents need financial support. Madera families with young children frequently pick the longer timeframe because education, housing and childcare costs converge.

Liabilities. A home loan is typically the largest financial obligation. Coverage sufficient to eliminate it lets your family maintain their living situation if they lose your income.

Education costs. A rough estimate per child in current dollars. Including it in your coverage now is more straightforward than taking out additional insurance later.

Existing coverage. Current savings you could spend, and employer-provided life coverage. Group policies from an employer typically terminate when employment ends, so many families only count part of it.

Once you have a target amount, the quote tool displays what that amount will cost across 10 to 30 year periods from all available carriers. Many households find that paying a bit extra at younger ages is reasonable given how modest the monthly difference is.
